Dear Old
Bedfordian
|
We have had a number of UK regional events in the past few weeks from
Sussex to Somerset, with more coming up including Scotland and
Bedfordshire. These are a great way to meet your local OBs, enjoy
fellowship and see a part of your local area.
We've
also enjoyed a special reunion recently. The 1964 1st VIII rowing crew,
who broke three records in one day and won their Bedford Regatta,
reunited at the School after fifty years, travelling from as far as
Melbourne, Ecuador, South Africa and Los Angeles to be there. It was a memorable and
moving weekend of events; they recreated their team photo at the 150th
anniversary of the Bedford Regatta and were delighted to see the current
1st VIII win the trophy. Read about the weekend and see the
photos here. Assisted by the OB Club,
the reunion was driven by the crew itself - if you would like to bring
together a team or group from your school days, please get in touch with
us to get started.
We
have been delighted to see so many OBs recently, including those who
haven't engaged with us since leaving School. We hope many more will
consider getting in touch or coming along to an event - our extensive and
varied programme is always up on the website with something, we hope, to appeal to everyone.
Best
wishes,
Richard,
Gina and Alex

From the Head
Master...
|
I am always amazed - pleasantly so - when
I see just how much the School means to people. It has been a vintage
year for that with Brian Saville's extraordinary legacy being the obvious
highlight. A couple of weeks ago, two of our most talented musicians of
recent years - Cristian Grajner de Sa and Alex Collins - gave their time
to return and play the Bach Double Violin Concerto to mark Martin Hughes'
final concert directing the Chamber Orchestra. They were delighted to be
back... Read

Networking in London
Bedford School is very proud of its connection with the Movember
Charity and the hard work of boys and staff to support their annual
appeal. Continuing this relationship OB Hywel Mills, who works for the
charity, hosted our Business Networking Forum at their London offices
on 30th April. Despite the tube strike, nearly thirty OBs joined us for
a sociable and enjoyable evening. See the photos here. The next event will take place in autumn - check the Events page for more details closer to the time.

Inaugral OB Arts Exhibition
The first OB Arts Exhibition is taking place this summer, with the
Exhibition Opening on 6th June, at 6.30pm. All are welcome to come
along, and to also attend the Art Reunion Dinner at 8pm, at which there
will be numerous past and current Art staff including John Sylvester,
Rob Campbell and Carolyn Blake. If you studied and pursued an
art-related career (e.g. a graphic/website design, architect, jewellery
design), you can still submit your work to be exhibited. Find out more about the Exhibition
and Dinner.

Do we have your address?
The 2014 OB Review will pop through every Old Bedfordians' letterbox in
June - if we have your current address! If you're not sure or have
moved recently, please drop
us an email to obclub@bedfordschool.org.uk and let us know your current postal address by the end of
May so we can ensure you get this jam-packed publication.

Commonwealth Games
Are there any Old Bedfordians who are participating in the Glasgow 2014
Commonwealth Games? With a history of great sportsmen being educated at
the School, we are sure there must be! We are keen to recognise those
who are taking part, so if you will be, or you know of an OB who will
be, please get in touch and let us know!

Golfing Around!
We are delighted to have twelve teams already signed up to take part in
the Foundation Golf Day on Saturday 7th June. It is a very informal
event open to OBs, parents, staff and friends, for those of all golfing
ability! All proceeds will support the Golf Masterclass Programme.
There are still spaces available if you would like to gather a team and
sign up - find the booking form and more
information here.

A South Carolina link
The School hosted a group of University of South Carolina students on
17th May, coordinated by Julian Dalzell (55-67), as part of a 10-day
trip to introduce students to a variety of UK businesses and
industries. They had a tour of the School estate, talked with boys and
were introduced to cricket! Julian spent 43 years with Shell before
joining the University as a lecturer. Find out more and see the photos.

A Garden Visit
A visit and lunch at the beautiful Hestercombe Gardens at the start of
May proved a very popular format, with over fourty OBs and guests
coming along. Thank you to the DVP for Somerset, Gloucester and
Bristol, Richard Shorrock, for organising such a brilliant day. See photos of the event here.

Bedford Regatta
On 10th May, the weather held out - mostly - for the 150th anniversary
of the Bedford Regatta. OBs gathered in the Enclosure, some of
whom hadn't been back for thirty years. Others displayed their classic
cars on the riverbank. The current School 1st VIII winning the trophy
was the icing on the cake! See photos.

Great Day Out at Glynde
The weather could not have been better for the DVP Surrey, Sussex and
Kent visit to Glynde Estate, with Estate Manager Nick Jones (86-91).
Most hadn't met before but thoroughly enjoyed chatting over a picnic, a
tour, and a trip up Mount Caburn to look over the South Downs and Ouse
Valley - and paragliders! Read more and see photos.

Prize Giving
We were delighted that Miles Young (63-72) - Worldwide Chairman and CEO
of Ogilvy & Mather - and DVP for New York, found time in his busy
schedule to return to be guest of honour at Prize Giving. He reminded
boys that a balanced outlook and ability to relate and work with people
is just as important as technical skills. Listen to the speeches here.
